I’ve only been to Sydney for five days, but in that short time I discovered some absolutely amazing places to eat. The great thing about Sydney is it’s not like New York City (where everything is insanely expensive) or like Thailand (where things are cheaper than they should be). It seems like the restaurants in Sydney provide good value for your dollar, or at least they did for me!
If you’re planning on moving to Australia, visiting Sydney, or just spending a few weeks there (for whatever reason), here are some of my favorite places to grab dinner in this lovely city.
-Izakaya Den
Izakaya Den was recommended to me by one of the locals when I said I wanted an authentic Japanese meal. I love the vibe in this restaurant! The decor is very modern and stylish, but not so much so that it feels cold or impersonal.
They have an extensive sake menu with over 100 different types! Believe me when I say that’s a lot of sake.
After taking my drink order (and pouring me some sake to try), the waitress brought out a plate of fresh sliced fish, which she claimed was her favorite dish on the menu. Needless to say, it tasted amazing. It was served with spring onions, ginger, miso paste, garlic, and coriander leaves.
The sashimi platter at Izaya Den I didn’t know what to expect when I ordered the sashimi platter, but it turned out to be one of my favorite dishes in Sydney. The fish was so fresh that even just looking at the picture makes me want to go back!
And I can’t forget about dessert! Luckily for me, their desserts are also made in-house. I tried three different desserts here – all were delicious!!
-Bistro Guillaume
This French restaurant is known as one of the best and most expensive restaurants in Sydney. If you’re planning on dining here, make sure you book your table several days (weeks) in advance and call your credit card company to let them know where and how much you will be spending!
Their menu is in French and it changes every week, but you can ask the waiters for their “Chef’s Recommendations.” I’ve ordered this dish three times now (it’s that good) and I still wasn’t able to memorize exactly how they prepare it. This happens when you order something too good to forget!
It looks like a normal bowl of soup, but when you taste it…WOW!! It has a very strong truffle flavor, so if you’re not a fan of truffle don’t order it. If you are a fan of truffles, then get ready for your mind to have an out-of-body experience.
I may have a problem…
-Rockpool
This restaurant is a little fancier than the other two, but it’s worth going to if you want high quality food. The atmosphere in this place is perfect for a date or even just for an expensive meal with friends.
Bain-marie at Rockpool The menu changes every few weeks and the dishes are constantly being improved upon by one of Australia’s most famous chefs. If you’re not sure what to order for entree, ask the waiter/waitress to bring out their samples so you can try them before making up your mind.
